One of the things that I like most about Cigar box guitars (CBG), is that such a humble instrument is the foundation of modern blues, rock, and most genres of music. Today, CBGs are often viewed as novelty instruments that can be “cool”, but not considered a real instrument. That said, artists such as Samantha Fish, Justin Johnson, and even Sir Paul McCartney are bringing the CBG to the limelight and showing that it’s a legit instrument with a unique sound and capable of much more than expected.
To showcase this, in September of 2019, the National Blues Museum in St. Louis, MO opened an exhibit on CBG and other homemade instruments. I was lucky enough to be one of the 35 or so builders to design and build one of roughly 50 instruments put on display. To be part of something like that was really awesome. I get to honor the past and be part of the resurgence of the CBG.
